Micro businesses are simple businesses that can be started very quickly. They are a perfect business model for teenagers because they are small and quite manageable. A teenager should be able to run a micro business and keep up with school work and extra curricular activities. Running a micro should only take a few hours a week, up to 20 at most. The time commitment should be similar to working a part time job, but the rewards are much greater!
A micro business is an excellent business model for teenagers because micros are:
- Simple and fast to start up
- Have only one worker, you, the owner
- Are formed as sole proprietorships
- Need little or no start up money
- Are usually home based
- Low risk
- Manageable
- Let you learn a lot while earning money
You go into business to make money, but wouldn’t it be great if your business also had other benefits?
What if you learned so much, you decided to launch another, larger business?
Phil was in high school when he discovered that he was good at buying small websites, revamping them and building up traffic and then reselling the site for a tidy profit. After a few years of running his business as a micro, Phil launched a larger website project using the profits from his micro. He learned how to hire web designers, advertise on the internet and even how to pay taxes on his profit! After only two years, he was offered $300,000 for his website.
What if you found your future career by running a micro business?
Meghan was a talented violinist and as a teenager she started giving violin lessons to children. She loved it and is pursuing a violin performance major in college on a full tuition scholarship.
Or what if you learned what you definitely do not want to do for a career?
What would that be worth to you?
Lucas has a lawn mowing and landscaping business. He’s been very successful, but he wants to study mechanical engineering in college. Someday he plans to apply what he learned in running a micro business to running his own engineering firm.
