16-year-old New York native Ian Hetherington may have a unique talent, but he is putting it to use in a micro business! As a child, Ian studied his father’s woodwork. After watching his father create a pen out of wood, Ian knew he had to learn how to do it. Pretty soon, he had mastered the art of woodworking and starting making pens himself. What better way to use his gift that to create a micro business? That’s just what Ian did. Now, he sells all kinds of pens through Pens by Ian Hetherington, with materials varying from wood to marble. And business has been great. He sells his handcrafted creations at a local gift shop at prices ranging from $25-$40 per pen. Ian insists that the success from his business is not what drives him. “It’s not really the money that’s important; it’s something that I really enjoy doing.”

Teens, you can use your unique gift or talent to create a micro business, and if it’s something you love, like Ian, it won’t even feel like work! That sounds pretty great.
